Project North 44 is pleased to welcome you to the celebration of the International Women’s Day, on March 3rd, to be held at the Worker’s Action Center. The theme of the International Day for 2019 is ‘Balance for Better’ and we will review gender (in)equality and (im)balanced for women and men in different spheres of life: Work, Social and Family. We are extremely honored to welcome our distinguished keynote speaker, Dr. Margrit Eichler (OISE/UofT) and our panel speakers. Dr.Eichler is going to enlighten us about the trials and tribulations of the 1970’s Women’s Movement in Canada from the eyes of young immigrant woman in pursuit of an academic career. Our panelists will examine the work/family/social life themes and share their valuable knowledge and experiences with us, by highlighting the complex overlaps, interactions and tensions women experience in balancing the demands throughout their lives.
According to the observations of various international organizations (The United Nations Development Fund for Women, The United Nations Population Fund), women of the world perform anywhere between 70% to 10% of all paid-work, and well over 90% of all non-paid work. Yet, women own only about 10% of the global wealth, and even in highly affluent countries such as Canada, still earn about ¾ of what men earn in comparable jobs. Through today’s various presentations and through the keynote address, we will try to explore the remaining bottlenecks and obstacles in the family/work and social life dimensions, always keeping in mind that there are complex overlaps, interactions and serious tensions in women’s lives. Our keynote speaker and each of our panelists will suggest personal, social and state level changes necessary to reduce some of these obstacles and tensions to balance for better.
